Gastric Bypass

Gastric or stomach bypass is a serious weight loss surgical operation to treat morbidly obese patients during which the stomach is stapled and a shortcut is created around the upper digestive tract which bypasses up to 5 feet of small intestine. Examples include: roux-en-y gastric bypass, fobi pouch, biliopancreatic diversion and duodenal switch. These stomach bypass operations can sometimes be performed using laparoscopic surgical techniques (video-assisted) as well as traditional open surgery methods.

Malabsorptive Operation

Stomach bypass surgery is called "malabsorptive surgery" as it aims to reduce the amount of calories (and nutrients) the patient can absorb.

Side Effects

In addition to normal health risks associated with serious surgery, post-operative complications of stomach bypass include: vomiting or digestive upsets due to "dumping syndrome", staple-failure, band-slippage, and chronic malnutrition. Most, if not all, these problems can be corrected and, in any case, probably compare favorably with the known risks of class 3 obesity.

Weight Loss After Gastric Bypass

Precise success rates for this weight loss surgery are not known. But patients typically lose 60-80 percent of their excess weight, and, if they observe the correct post-operative dietary and exercise guidelines, stand a good chance of avoiding weight regain.
